Double and Multi-Layered Mounts

Double and Multi-layered Mounts

Double and multiple layered mounts as their name suggests comprise one or more mount superimposed on another, thereby allowing a small amount of the lower mount/mounts being visible.  This allows for a complimentary or contrasting colour to be seen providing for a feeling of depth and a visible lead in to the image.  An additional advantage of this type of mount is to distance the artwork from the glazing which is particularly useful when framing artwork such as pastels and/or chalk drawings.

The distance between mounts, termed reveal, is normally around 5mm dependent upon the overall size of the mount.  When using triple mounts the reveal should not be the same at each level.

Usually a strong colour is chosen for the lower mount; if used for the top mount this would then appear to be too dominant.  The choice of colour for the bottom mount will  draw one’s eye to that colour within the image and can be used effectively to subtly re-address the balance of colour in the frame.  Double mounts can be used to display club or corporate colours and link artwork to decorative schemes.  When displaying a number or group of images it is an advantage to use the same coloured top mount but using a different coloured lower mount to reflect and enhance the aesthetic qualities of the image.
